When an angry, red penis rash appears, men are likely to jump to all kinds of conclusions about where it came from, starting with the latest hookup. However, while it is natural for sexually active men to worry about STIs, there are many other conditions that can cause eruptions on the penis skin. Some weird penis skin symptoms and their treatments are described here, as well as some no-nonsense tips for better penis health.
1) A red, itchy rash spreading in a circular pattern away from a point of origin: this may be a case of tinea cruris, or jock itch, a fungal infection that can be spread from one person to another, either through skin on skin contact or the sharing of personal items. Jock itch is more likely to affect the thighs and groin area, but may appear on the penis. It is treated using over-the-counter antifungal creams.
2) A red, itchy rash accompanied by cracked, dry skin and/or a thick, whitish discharge: a possible yeast infection, caused by the Candida yeast that is also responsible for female yeast infections. While it is easily spread through intimate contact, it is not a sexually transmitted infection per se, as it is nearly always present on the skin of all individuals. Treating a rash like this also involves over-the-counter antifungal creams.
3) A red rash accompanied by a swollen, painful foreskin, a foul odor and/or a thick discharge: This may also be a yeast infection, or it could be a condition known as balanitis – an inflammation often caused by substandard hygiene in men who are uncircumcised. Men who are prone to balanitis may help prevent future problems by gently cleansing underneath the foreskin on a daily basis.
4) Contact dermatitis: Irritants from the surrounding environment, such as plants, insect bites, chemical detergents and other substances that come in contact with the penis skin, can cause itchy, red rashes and discomfort. Washing the area carefully, avoiding contact with any triggers, and applying cortisone creams are generally recommended. Cortisone creams should be used sparingly and only according to the directions on the package (for over the counter preparations) or as directed by a doctor.
5) Heat rash: In hot weather, excessive sweating and the warm environment below the belt can trigger heat rash. Applying cool compresses and wearing light, breathable clothing can help.
Ongoing care for better penis health
The best way to deal with penis rashes and other men’s health issues is, of course, to stop them before they start. Following these tips is a good way to avoid problems like rashes, not to mention unpleasant odors:
1) Choose quality, breathable underwear. Most men are more concerned about their outer clothing, since this is a matter of personal style and expression. However, it’s a good idea to give some thought to what goes underneath, as well, even if it means shelling out a few extra dollars on boxers or briefs. To reduce the humidity in the area, as well as wicking sweat and other fluids away from the body, underwear should be made of breathable fabrics such as cotton, rather than synthetic materials.
2) Wash at least once a day, and always bathe the area after exercise. Sweat and built-up gunk are some of the primary triggers for superficial skin rashes, so washing regularly is a must for keeping things smooth and clear. Avoid soaps and cleansers with added fragrances, as these can actually cause rashes in their own right; bathe the area gently, using warm water, and make sure all traces of cleanser are rinsed away.
3) Pat the area dry thoroughly before dressing. Trapped moisture on the skin can encourage fungal overgrowth and provides the perfect environment for Candida yeast and tinea cruris (the jock itch fungus).
4) Apply a penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) to clean, freshly-dried skin. Keeping the penis skin moisturized with natural emollients such as Shea butter – an essential ingredient in a quality penis product – can help protect the skin and reduce the likelihood of developing dry skin rashes and minor infections. Look for a product with vitamin A – a natural antibacterial agent – as well as skin-protectant antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid and vitamin C. Use daily as directed for a healthier penis.
